Installing a Printer in Windows

If you have any problems with installing or configuring printers, feel free to contact the ECEn SysOps for help.

1
Open the Start menu and click on "Printers and Faxes". If you can't see it, open "Control Panel" and look for it there.
2
Click on "Add a printer" in the left sidebar.

3
Click "Next" to get to the "Local or Network Printer" screen. Choose "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer" and hit "Next".
4
On the "Specify a Printer" screen, choose an option to "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network." Type the following into the "URL" text box:

http://printers.ee.byu.edu:631/printers/(Name of Printer)

where (Name of Printer) is the name of the printer you want to install (See "General Printing Issues" for a list of available printers). For example, to install the ps425 printer, enter the following as the URL:

http://printers.ee.byu.edu:631/printers/ps425

Note: If you mistype the printer location you may get a dialog asking about 'Security Options'. If this happens, go back and re-check the location of the printer to make sure it looks like the one above--in particular make sure the 'printers/' part appears before the printer name. Also, be sure that you don't have any spaces or tabs before the printer name in the text box. Windows won't be able to find the printer with any spaces, tabs, etc. preceding the printer name.
5
For the Manufacturer, choose "HP". For the Printer Driver, you will need to select the driver that best matches the printer you want to use. See "General Printing Issues" for a list of printers and drivers that will work with them. Choose the driver that corresponds to the printer you are trying to install. For example, if we are installing the printer ps425, then the driver we want to select is "HP Laserjet 4100 Series PS".

If you found an appropriate driver, select it and click "OK" to continue. If you couldn't find one listed, refer to the "Downloading and Installing Printer Drivers" tutorial.
7
Choose whether or not you want to use this printer as your default printer.
8
Click "Finish" and you are done!
