This page was originally based on documentation provided by CAEDM but has undergone extensive revision and is being maintained by the ECEn
Web Team. The original CAEDM documentation can be found
here (PDF only). If you have problems using the VPN, you can contact the
ECEn SysOps, who will be happy to help. You can also contact the
CAEDM Administrators (who maintain the CAEDM VPN). If you find errors in this document, please let the
ECEn Web Team know so that we can fix them. Thanks!
Some general information about the CAEDM VPN can be found under
"CAEDM VPN".
There are two ways of connecting to the college VPN. The first method uses PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) and is the recommended way to
connect; the second method tunnels a PPTP connection through an L2TP (Layer-two Tunneling Protocol) connection. This second method is useful is your ISP (Internet
Service Provider) doesn't allow direct PPTP connections.
To make things easier for you, this tutorial is divided into two main parts. Part 1 explains how to set up a PPTP connection, and Part 2 describes how
to create a PPTP connection through an L2TP connection. Part 2 will only be necessary if Part 1 doesn't work.
So once you've finished the steps in Part 1, check to see if your VPN connection is working properly before going on to Part 2. You only need to continue if it
doesn't work.
Part 1: PPTP Only (Preferred)
 | | 1 | Go to the control panel and open "Network and Dial-Up Connections" (Windows 2000) or "Network Connections" (Windows XP).
| 2 | Click on "Make New Connection" (Windows 2000) or "Create a new connection" (Windows XP).
| 3 | Use the wizard to create a new VPN connection, using fortress.et.byu.edu as the server to connect to.
| 4 | Right-click on the new connection and choose "Properties". Click on the "Networking" tab, set the VPN type to PPTP, and uncheck
"File and Printer Sharing" (for greater security).
| 5 | Select the TCP/IP protocol and click the button labeled "Properties." Set the DNS server for this connection to be 128.187.48.2
| 6 | Click on the "Advanced..." button, and select the "WINS" tab. Add 10.8.125.201 and 10.8.120.130 as WINS servers.
If your ISP does not support PPTP VPN connections, connection attempts will generally fail when trying to check your password.
If you've completed Part 1 but still can't connect to the VPN, do the following:
 | | 1 | Open the "Networking" (Windows 2000) or "Network Connections" (Windows XP) folder.
| 2 | Right click on the connection you created in Part 1 and select "Properties".
| 3 | Go to the "Security" tab and uncheck "Require Data Encryption".
| 4 | Click on the Networking tab. Set the type of VPN to "L2TP IPSec".
| 5 | Next, edit the registry (or download and open VPNSetting.reg, which does this step for you). Run regedit and navigate to My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\ParametersAdd a new DWORD value named ProhibitIPSec and set it equal to 1.
| 6 | Reboot to allow the registry change to take effect.
| 7 | Create a new VPN connection, like you did in Part 1. Use 10.8.127.6 as the server (this causes the PPTP connection to be made using the L2TP connection).
| 8 | Right-click on the new connection and choose "Properties". Click on the "Networking" tab, set the VPN type to PPTP, and uncheck
"File and Printer Sharing" (for greater security).
| 9 | Select the TCP/IP protocol and click the button labeled "Properties." Set the DNS server for this connection to be 128.187.48.2
| 10 | Click on the "Advanced..." button, and select the "WINS" tab. Add 10.8.125.201 and 10.8.120.130 as WINS servers.
| 11 | To connect to the CAEDM VPN, open the L2TP connection first. Once you are connected using L2TP, open the PPTP connection.
If you wish, this "pre-dial" step can be made automatic as one of the settings of the PPTP connection.
