What exactly is a Virtual Private Network?
BYU, like many organizations, is connected together by a computer network that has been fortified
and secured against outside access. This is an important part of keeping the school computers secure.
One side effect, however, is that legitimate users are restricted in their ability to access BYU
computers, software, and services from home. Virtual Private Networks allow a way around that problem.
By creating a special authorized and encrypted connection with BYU computers, people working off campus
can directly access the BYU network as if they were a part of it.
