What exactly is a Virtual Private Network?
BYU, like many organizations, is connected together by a computer network that has been fortified and secured against outside access. This is an important part of keeping the school computers secure. One side effect, however, is that legitimate users are restricted in their ability to access BYU computers, software, and services from home. Virtual Private Networks allow a way around that problem. By creating a special authorized and encrypted connection with BYU computers, people working off campus can directly access the BYU network as if they were a part of it.

Why would I want to use CAEDM's VPN?
The VPN is a great way to access your CAEDM home directory and select ECEn network drives (e.g. fs-web) from off campus. For example, professors and TAs can work on class webpages from their computers at home. When mapping ECEn network drives through CAEDM's VPN, you must use the full name, something like \\fs-web.ee.byu.edu\mywebpage

The VPN also makes it possible to send email from off-campus to off-campus through our mail server without having to enable TLS and user authentication.

How do I connect to CAEDM's VPN?
We provide an HTML tutorial on how to set up the CAEDM VPN, based on CAEDM's documentation (which is available only in PDF format).

Where do I go for help?
The ECEn SysOps will be glad to help you set up and run the VPN (Virtual Private Network). However, since the CAEDM Administrators operate and maintain the VPN, they will probably be the most helpful to you.
