Scheduling Automatic Updates with Symantec Antivirus

This page tells how to schedule automatic updates of the virus information Symantec Antivirus uses to look for viruses. If you use a different antivirus product, please contact the ECEn SysOps for help setting up automatic updates of its virus definitions.
1
From the desktop, double click on the Symantec Antivirus 'Shield' icon in the system tray in the lower right corner of your screen.

If you can't find it, try clicking the "show hidden icons" button, which looks like the "<" symbol. Some more icons should become visible, hopefully the Antivirus Shield will be one of them. When it appears, double click on it.

Click on the File Menu, then "Schedule Updates".

4
If the "Enable scheduled automatic updates" box is checked, then you should already be receiving automatic antivirus updates. If not, check it, and make sure that the update schedule displayed meets your needs.
5
If you want to change the schedule for automatic antivirus updates, click on the "Schedule..." button. This will bring up the "Virus Definition Update Schedule" window.
6
We recommend setting the update frequency to "daily". Under "When", choose any time when your computer will be on and connected to the internet--lunchtime or the middle of the night (if you leave your computer on all the time) could be good choices.
